Reasons to have a cake consultation
One item couple’s have trouble with is deciding on a wedding cake. The consultation process assists with any questions and reservations you may have.
Planning a wedding can be very stressful so, for myself the cake was the hardest thing for me to plan. I didn’t know if it should be an all-white cake and have it classic and simple. Or an all-black cake with gold detailing. The options are truly endless.
At Silver Lining Cake Designs we look at your inspiration for your wedding, the invitations, the colour pallet, and the flowers. This assists in creating the options for the couple.
This then starts the conversation about the design. Designs can vary by size and detailing. Couples have an array of options to select for cake sizing. Larger cakes being 3-4 tiers or a smaller cake for an intimate wedding being 1-2 tiers. We also have the cakes that are showstoppers at 6-10 tiers.
We create out of foam tiers the overall height and width of the cake to gain an understanding of how it will look when you’re standing next to it. This also helps the couple visually see if the size is actually what they want.
How the cake will be served is also very important. Coffee portions or dessert portions? Coffee portions are 1 inch x 1 inch are served after dessert with tea and coffee. Dessert portions are 2 inches x 2 inches. They are more generous in size as this would be your dessert at your event. A common tradition, is keeping the top tier for the first wedding anniversary. This question is asked so that way if the couple does chose to save it is not counted in the total portions available.
Design selected as inspiration by our couples always showcase 2 finishes, fondant cake or a buttercream cake.
Well, what is a fondant cake?
Fondant is an edible icing that’s used to decorate cakes. It is rolled into a thin layer, and then draped over cakes.
Whereas a buttercream cake is made from egg whites, sugar and butter. Buttercream cakes do need to be placed in the fridge. Once its set, decoration can then be applied such as gold leaf, flowers, and stencilling. Buttercream cakes can be left out on display however, they become soft when they come to room temperature.
So, we advise if you’re having a garden wedding during summer, we recommend the cake to be kept in the fridge until the cake cutting. Or left in a cool room indoors out of direct sunlight. Alternatively, do your cake cutting first when you start your reception that way its done and out of the way and you can enjoy the rest of your evening.
Once all the selections are done, we provide a rough sketch of the cake with the additions of flowers, optional extras i.e., gold leaf, tier separators, and hand piped designs.
With our designs to make the cake more personal we can tied any details from the veil embellishments or the from the bridal gown, if requested.
This consultation process provides the couple with the information needed to make their decisions.
So, if you’re tossing up weather to come in for a cake consultation or not, we would recommend it. This allows you to meet the designer and ensure your requests are met. The wealth of knowledge you have after your appointment will make you more certain of your choices.
